Who we are
At Sight and Sound, we believe every child deserves the chance to see, hear, and experience the world fully. About our founder -
Zaid Mohamed
Growing up with hearing loss, I often felt isolated and anxious in social settings, afraid of missing key parts of conversations and struggling to fully connect with others. Later, as my eyesight began to worsen, I found it increasingly difficult to go out and interact with others at night.
I was fortunate enough to have access to hearing aids and glasses, tools that helped me adapt and thrive. But I quickly realized that many children facing similar challenges aren’t as privileged. That’s why I founded Sight and Sound—to support children with vision and hearing impairments, providing resources and hope for a brighter, more connected future.
What is Usher’s Syndrome?
Usher’s Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that affects both hearing and vision. It leads to progressive vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa and varying degrees of hearing loss from birth. As the condition progresses, it can significantly impact daily life, making simple tasks challenging. At Sight and Sound, we are committed to raising awareness, funding research, and supporting children affected by Usher’s Syndrome and similar challenges.
How does Usher’s Syndrome affect daily life?
Usher’s Syndrome affects individuals in multiple ways, gradually diminishing both hearing and vision. In daily life, this can make communication, navigation, and routine tasks more challenging. People with Usher’s Syndrome may rely on assistive devices, adapt to low-light environments, or need special accommodations to help them interact with their surroundings. These challenges can be isolating, which is why support and resources are so crucial for those affected.
Where will my money be spent?
At Sight and Sound, we are committed to transparency and accountability. We’ll provide regular reports—monthly, bi-monthly, or annually—detailing how donations are allocated. Your generous contributions help us fund essential resources for children with hearing and vision impairments. This includes assisting families with the cost of hearing aids, providing scholarships for special programs, and supporting groundbreaking research into Usher’s Syndrome and related conditions. By sharing these reports, we ensure that you know exactly how your support is making a difference.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
As of (11/07/24) we are not registered as a 501(c)(3) yet, however the IRS does allow a 2 year rollback period under certain circumstances so that your donation can be tax deductible! We’ll be sure to keep you updated!
How do you choose which families or individuals receive support?
We work closely with healthcare providers, educators, and community organizations to identify children and families who may benefit from our programs. Our goal is to ensure resources go to those who need them most.
